Looker Studio (Data Studio) vs Power BI vs Tableau: how to choose

A plain-language comparison of cost, data sources, sharing and learning curve, so you can pick the right reporting tool for your team.

The short answer

Choose Looker Studio for marketing, web and ads reporting built on Google and online platforms. Choose Power BI if your team lives in Excel and Microsoft 365 and needs deeper data modelling. Choose Tableau if analysts need to explore large data sets and build highly custom visuals.

All three tools turn raw numbers into dashboards. The right one depends less on features and more on where your data lives, who will read the report and how much set-up you want to carry.

What to weigh before you choose

  • Where your data lives. Google Analytics 4, Google Ads and Google Sheets connect to Looker Studio with almost no set-up. Excel files, SQL databases and Microsoft products suit Power BI. Tableau is strong with databases, files and large data sets.
  • Who will use it. A dashboard that managers open on a phone has different needs from a model analysts explore all day.
  • Cost. Looker Studio is free to start, with a paid tier for extra management features. Power BI Desktop is free to build in, but sharing in the Power BI service needs paid licences. Tableau uses paid per-user licences. Prices and plans change, so check each vendor before you decide.
  • Modelling. If you need to join many tables, define measures once and reuse them everywhere, Power BI and Tableau go further than Looker Studio on its own.
  • Learning curve. Looker Studio is the quickest to pick up. Power BI and Tableau take longer but reward the time.

Which one fits which team

  • Online stores and ad reporting: Looker Studio. It connects to the platforms you already use and is easy for a whole team to read.
  • Agencies: Looker Studio for client reports that update themselves. Power BI or Tableau only if a client already uses them.
  • Finance, operations and larger teams in Microsoft 365: Power BI.
  • Data-heavy teams with in-house analysts: Tableau or Power BI.

You are not locked in for ever

The most valuable thing you build is not the dashboard. It is a clean, joined and trusted set of data. Once that exists, the same data can feed more than one tool, so choosing a tool is a smaller decision than it feels.

If you are not sure, tell us where your data lives and who will use the report. We build in all three and will recommend the lightest option that works. See our dashboard services or send us a message.
