Google Analytics 418 October 20262 min read
Before you start
You need a Google account that has access to your GA4 property, and a Looker Studio account, which uses the same Google login. Menu names change from time to time, so the wording on your screen may differ slightly.
Connect GA4 to a new report
- Go to Looker Studio and sign in with the Google account that has access to your GA4 property.
- Choose Create, then Report.
- In the list of connectors, choose Google Analytics. Allow access if you are asked.
- Select your account and property. If you are asked for a data stream, pick the one for your website.
- Choose Add, then Add to report.
Build your first charts
- Add three scorecards: Total users, Sessions and Key events (or conversions, depending on your account).
- Add a time series chart of sessions by date to show the trend.
- Add a table with Session default channel group as the dimension and sessions and key events as metrics.
- Add a second table with Landing page as the dimension.
- Add a date range control so readers can change the period.
- Turn on comparison date range in the scorecards to show the change against the previous period.
Share your report
Use the Share button to invite people by email or send a link. You can also schedule the report to be emailed on a regular basis, so people receive it without logging in.
If the numbers do not match GA4
- Different date range or time zone. Check that both use the same dates and the same property time zone.
- Recent data. GA4 can take time to finish processing, so today and yesterday may change.
- Thresholds and sampling. In some reports GA4 hides or estimates small numbers, which can create small differences.
- Different field names. A metric in Looker Studio may be named differently from the same one in GA4. Check the field description.
- Empty charts. Usually a sign you picked the wrong property or do not have access to it.
Prefer to skip the set-up? Our Google Analytics 4 template comes with the charts built in, and we can connect it to your account for you.
